What is the best antivirus system for my computer?

I have a dell computer just like this one:

http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/dell-di...

I have tried Norton, Mcaffee, Panda, Zone Alarm (don't like the pop ups) and now AVAST.

I bought my computer 2004 - Don't know if that helps...

Thanks!!!

PCTools products do get good reviews. The good thing is they have free versions of their products. They work great. Spyware Doctor from the Google pack is a must. I highly recommend it. I bought Webroots Spysweeper and spyware doctor finds stuff spysweeper does not. Having both is a perfect combo and I recommend running two anti-spyware products.

That just means to shut that program down so it's not showing on your task bar. Whenever I uninstall any programs, I ALWAYS shut down any programs that might be running. It allows the uninstall to go smoothly.

There are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.

First, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:

1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser

2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".

What may be the problem if two anti-virus softwares are loaded on a same computer?

I have loaded AVG and AVast anti virus software on my computer. please any one tell me if there is any problem if they are loaded at the same time.

What may be the problem if two anti-virus softwares are loaded on a same computer?panda

This is a not recommended as it is most likely if there is not a conflict they will work against each other and have a negative effect on your system protection.

What may be the problem if two anti-virus softwares are loaded on a same computer?suzuki

There might be some program errors if both are running/scanning at the same time. You'll notice a distinct issue with processing time if both programs have a real time scanning function. I.e. always on. Other than that no real issues.

You do however only need one virus scanner.
They will conflict and therefore it is best to remove one. There is not, a problem when running two Anti-spyware programs.
Having two antivirus softwares installed at the same time may cause them both to malfunction. I've come across several instances where two different softwares have identified files from each other as malevolent, recommending they be quarantined or deleted.
As long as you only run `one` antivirus there can be no problem.

Just "don`t" run them together.
Be more concern about the memory that will be consumed when it starts to load.

I haven't done that before, try observing your Computers performance and Applications start time.
from past observations.

load 1 anti virus program, computer feels like it running at half speed.

load 2 anti virus program, computer feels like it running at 1/4 speed.

then when you download some email attachment both programs fight over it and your computer freezes up.
You should never do this. you will have real problems.. Both will clash like crazy. its like trying to ware 1 shoe for both legs. Use any 1 anti virus at a time.

I have been getting this error message, data execution prevention, why?

When I go to My documents/my pictures and I try to do anything with my pics, I get a box that comes up and says Data Execution Prevention-microsoft windows

This is a new problem for me and it's anoying. Is there anyway to fix this?

I am running windows XP, sp2, and it's a DELL.

I am using avast virus protection, CCleaner, ad-aware, spybot search %26 destroy and window washer. I did a defrag and a disc cleanup.

I must say that it worked fine before I went on vacation and when I got home it was doing this. My son used the internet while he was here with the cats. Other than that, i don't know what is going on.

I have been getting this error message, data execution prevention, why?pc security

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a set of hardware and software technologies that perform additional checks on memory to help prevent malicious code from running on a system. In Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, DEP is enforced by hardware and by software.

The primary benefit of DEP is to help prevent code execution from data pages. Typically, code is not executed from the default heap and the stack. Hardware-enforced DEP detects code that is running from these locations and raises an exception when execution occurs. Software-enforced DEP can help prevent malicious code from taking advantage of exception-handling mechanisms in Windows.

What is wrong with my internet connection?

disable firewall and try
My computer does that too on occasion, and used to do it a lot on Limewire.

I can't help you much, but have you tried the option of "connect" when you are in itunes?
check your proxy server or ports it might be that you have spyware an they changed you dns and are rerouting . So they could get your info an install more spyware or wat ever they do just check your setting an make sure they goto port 80
Based on just your question, it seems you have too much protection. Norton, Avast, Windows Defender and a firewall. Sometimes, too much protection causes problems. Unless you are a secret government agent or download a lot of snarky stuff (like porn), try toning down your protection. Delete Norton, its a memory hog anyway, and adjust the security levels on your other programs to as low as you can live with. If your concerned with security, save your important files to a flash drive or external hard drive that's password protected.

Problem with Trojan Horse!?

I am currently using another computer. My personal computer is having constant problems with a trojan horse. I first thought it might have been something else, but it was confirmed when I downloaded Avast! Antivirus Home Edition. It picked it up in a Memory Scan, and said it needed to do a Startup Scan to get rid of it. Well I restarted my computer, and left it for a bit. The thing is, when my computer is inactive, in this case, the scan finished, and I wasn't there to select an option, the Trojan froze my computer again. So I could not get rid of it or move it. It was called something with Win32. Every time I tried to connect to the internet and ask this question, my computer froze, when I did a normal scan, it froze. So if I the trojan is destroying all my options, what do I do? How do I get rid of this Trojan, when I can't use any application without it eventually freezing and I have to manually power off the computer. I'm in desperate need of help, and Ithank you in advance.plz hlp

Problem with Trojan Horse!?pop up blocker

Try restarting your computer in safe mode and do the startup scan again. If all else fails, reformat your hard drive after retrieving important files in safe mode.

For future protection I recommend Xoftspy.

My sister and I had the same problem. Nothing would detect where the pop ups were coming from and no blocker would stop them. We finally figured out the easy solution however. Go to your control panel and open the add/remove programs. In the list of programs on your computer you will find one called CID Help. Just highlight it and remove it. I'm not even sure where it came from but the pop ups seemed to have started right after we both installed AIM 6.0. Not sure if it was in there or not but even if so, AIM still works fine w/o the CID Help file in my system and now, no more pop ups! Hope that helps.

Viruses have are giving me a real problem. I have tries F-secure, which was my best en gave up. tried nod32. it expires. Avast- hopless, Please help.

I need an antivirus?spyware remove

I would personally not recommend AVG. It's only very popular because it is free and an old, well known AV.

In recent tests it's performance is well below average of other antiviruses.

I would recommend Avira AntiVir Classic or Premium which is also recommended above. It's detection rates are much higher than AVG and Avast and it is lighter on resources.

If you don't mind paying for an AV, then Kaspersky is also very good.

As for AntiSpyware scanners. I think Spybot search and destroy has become quite a bloated program recently, since it's new "teatimer" which offers realtime protection. I found it lagged my PC quite a bit, and there are other free programs that have performed better at cleaning spyware infected PC's.

Ad-aware is also a popular spyware scanner, but only because it is an old, well known program. It was great years ago, like AVG and Spybot S%26D were, but recently it just can't keep up with other free programs and like the other two it has gone downhill in the last few years.

Windows Defender offers real-time protection.

For on-demand scans, I highly recommend A-Squared free and SUPERAntiSpyware.

Download SuperAntiSpyware. It will remove the majority of difficult Trojans etc.

http://www.superantispyware.com/

Turn off System Restore. Load the application in normal mode but run in Safe Mode. Safe Mode can be started by continually pressing F8 during the boot sequence.

If you are badly infected you might need to run SuperAntiSpyware more than once to give you a totally clean system.

Assuming SuperAntiSpyware still failed to totally clean your system I suggest you download a Smitfraud removal program from:

Again run in Safe Mode.

Portal keeps crashing?

The Valve game Portal for PC keeps crashing on my Dell inspiron 6000 laptop. I have updated what I believe all my drivers. I can start the first level of the game but when the first portal is created I have about 20-40 seconds to move inside the cell thing. And when I step through the portal I get a frozen game with an "HL2.exe has experienced an error." I do not have any of the Antivirus software that affects the game ( to my knowledge(Avast! Antivirus home)). What is wrong?

Portal keeps crashing?suzuki

Do you have at least 1GB of Ram, and a 128MB or better graphics card?

If so, then I'm not sure, but if not, you probably need more graphics processing power.

One idea:

Try loading the game, and steam, only. Close all anti virus, anti spyware, etc, etc, etc, everything else, and see if it works... if it does, try again, turning one program on at a time, until it crashes, and then u might know which program is interfering.

Downloads can ruin your computer Reg cleaners/repairs.etc. why do so many use them?

I have tried telling you people, those quick fix programs can disable and ruin your computer over time, they only hide the problem until it is too late!

Contact me if you have a problem and want common sense repairs you can do in your own Windows Xp O.S., they are there just waiting for you to use them.

Avast and Spyware Terminator are a very good pair to have too, as they are not resource hogs and work very well together.

Do not add an extra spyware or virusware package, they will shut you down eventually.

Now, back to my original question, Why do people still download these programs?

The warnings are all over the place, but who listens, nobody.

I have a shop full of such computers that take about 1-2 hours each to fix and i don't get to catch up on building new ones as long as people keep sending their download disasters here.

My flash flash disk help?

Uhh, is AVAST! for U3 compatible with the 2g Myflash flash drive?

Thanks

My flash flash disk help?virus protection

U3 Flash disks will load TWO drives into your "MyComputer".

One is for the U3 to load from and the other is your actual storage area.

When you insert the drive, a orange U3 should show up on your taskbar. Click on that and you'll be able to configure it or run U3 programs. Under settings you should be able to disable the password, create a password, remove U3, or prevent it from automatically starting.

If U3 does not load, click on the U3 drive and launch it.

The other drive you should be able to read/write to it UNLESS U3 has it protected.

Otherwise it works like any other drive. I think older versions of U3 will choke on Vista until you upgrade it. You can do this on any XP machine you have administrative priviledges on.

Beyond that, without specifics, I'm not going to type any more.

Internet just exited out??vista

when you say "internet exits out" do you mean to say

- your IE window suddenly closes

- or you get disconnected from your internet connection

if it's just your IE browser, then you need to check on some settings on your browser and your connection settings too. but if it's the actual internet connection itself, my next question would be what type of connection are you using. is it a dial-up or high-speed like DSL or WIFI?

dial-up access has an idle time set that if a user is idle for a certain no. of minutes, the server disconnects them to the internet to give the bandwidth to other users.

as for the high-speed, same hardware-software factors are to be considered. it might be that the modem or router is faulty. or you have EMI's that greatly disrupts the wireless signal sent out. location can also be an issue because the farther you are from the remote terminal (central office that is the source of the dsl signal) the less chance you get to optimize your connection to it's fullest.

i hope you can provide more details so i can provide more specific answer. anyway, i hope this helped.

Good spyware remover???

I have W/XP - the other day my computer started to run slowly, and get pop-up webpages even when I had no browsers open (sometimes 10 at a time). I ran Mcaffe and Avast - they came up with some trojans and other malicious stuff. It is a little better, but now when I open a site or click on something, a page will pop up (random ones, from search sites to porn). I have pop-up blocker on too. Anyone know what other steps I can take to remedy? I suspect it all came from going on MySpace...because I don't search porn or anything like that. Any advise would be appreciated! Thanks!

I'm not sure what is going on exactly, so I need your help.

For some reason when I try to reply to an email through my yahoo account, I get an error-999 message. I also got the same error message when I tried answering a question earlier here on Answers.

Now, this happened to me last Monday also. I followed the links, ran a scan on my computer, and found that I had a few Dialler type viruses? I found out how to manually remove them from my system and did so. Then everything was back to working like usual. Now, I have run into the same problem yet again and nothing is working as of yet.

I ran the scan through yahoo, nothing. I even looked through some of the previous entries here and am currently doing a avast scan on the desktop.

Any ideas or advice?

Not sure what else to do? Do I have a virus?antivirus programs

It's most likely not a virus or other malware causing this problem. Yahoo tracks your IP as you use their services. If you exceed a certain amount of bandwidth in a particular session, then you can get error-999, especially if you use their automated services. Try doing more things manually. It could help. You usually have to wait 2 to 24 hours to logon again.

More info and suggested work-arounds can be found at the link provided in the answer above mine.
Error-999? God is 7, the Devil is 6, and man is 5. 9 is two above God, and there are three of them, so your problem is 3(God+2).

That's either a really good thing or a really bad thing.

Constant Computer Errors??

I keep getting errors and I've done everything except wipe out my computer. Im getting error reports on explore that crashes all my explorers. Im also getting errors on programs like MapleStory, Yahoo! Messanger, and one of my internet wireless. After the errors I cant run the programs untill I reboot. When I reboot it gets more errors. It takes longer than usually to reboot.

I've used these programs to erase everything:

AVG Anti-Virus

AVG Anti-Spyware

Spywear Docter

Spywearbot

Spywear S%26D

Avast! Anti-virus

Spywearbot and Spywear doctor picked up 2 Hijackers and I deleted them. All of these errors are getting worse. I tried to do a harddrive error scan...still there...I tried to do system restore twice and it failed to restore both times.

What should I do??

Constant Computer Errors??adware remover

I don't know the reputation of some of the antispyware stuff you're using; but as far as I can see you have one of three problems: 1. You have faulty memory (not likely if you've used your computer successfully in the past. 2. You were badly damaged by a virus. They can hide themselves and disrupt programs' ability to detect them if they get the chance. 3. One of the programs you used was actually malware (just meaning BAD/EVIL software) itself. In any case, it sounds like a very deep-rooted problem that I would have a pain in the everywhere to find and treat even if I had your computer right in front of me. I'd say that to numbers 2 and 3, your best bet is still to back up your personal/irreplacable data and reformat your drive and reinstall Windows. Of course, you can try the "Repair" option and see if that rewrites the registry entries that may very well be messed.

Is there any way to view and delete recently downloaded files on Windows XP?

Some files I had recently downloaded contained malware and spyware. I have avast antivirus (free and not the best, I know) and it's not getting rid of them. The files are not in the Add/Remove Programs section. Could anyone tell me how to find the files please?

Is there any way to view and delete recently downloaded files on Windows XP?agv

2 things you can do. Search for the file (think of the name short and simple - if looking for spyware search only spy) and also click the option hidden files. OR go to the temp folder (go to your C drive or w.e is your main driver and search in that folder.

Is there any way to view and delete recently downloaded files on Windows XP?antivirus software

anitvirus programs dont look for spyware/malware. pay for avast or avg pro if you want better, they are the best.
Sure, just go to Start, Programs, Acc, SystemResore and restore to a date before you loaded them in. Reboot, They will be gone.
Hi,

Go to C:\windows\Downloaded Program Files\

All Files you see inside this folder are downloaded from your last visit.

You can delete from there.

Clear temp files , cookies and history to remove complete traces.

Empty the recycle bin Too.

These are all basics, but if system is infected these cannot help.

One of the first applications built to find and remove adware and spyware, Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition's excellent reputation is well justified. The sky-blue, skinnable interface features five buttons. The first two, Status and Scan, lead to the core function of the application. These buttons initiate a scan of your files for adware components. After scanning is complete, the program presents a summary of results, followed by a list from which you select exactly which components to remove. Right-clicking an individual entry gives some information about the piece of suspected adware, though we would like more details.

Can't boot in to xp in dual boot 98se/xp system?

i have a dual boot 98se/xp system. On 98 i have "avast v4.6" installed (antivirus). Two days ago i installed "antivir" in xp. Then scanned the pc got many viruses caught. Acted as per the recomendations. Then booted in 98 and got the pc scanned. To my surprise again many viruses were found. Action taken as recommended.

Next day when I tried to boot in Xp the message of booting in appeared after pressing "ctrl-altr-del" and after entering password. But immediately logged off automatically and asked to press "ctrl-alt-del". Tried many times but same problem.

Tried to use all boot options pressing F8 but same situation every time.

Can anybody suggest the solution other than reinstalling xp.

Note: 1] I can boot in 98

2] I am the only user of pc and has only one user profile.

try going for anti-virus protection or p-cillin, it tells you what type of bugs you have on your computer and gets rid of it
if you had mcAfee you could do a trace on your computer that would say if the web site you were on had a virus or not but with avast I am not so sure. Good luck anyway
I got bad news for you. My ex did that on my brand new computer, and he caused it to pick up a virus that corrupted the hard drive and ruined the computer. I had to have a new hard drive put in the computer. Moral of the story, stay out of those places.

Computer keeps freezing when logging into safe mode (trying to get rid of spyware)?

Every time i try to login after booting in safe mode (want to run Smitfraud Fix), I go to Administration, click it, and it says "Loading Your Personal Settings" and sits there for almost an hour.

I'm trying to run Smitfraud Fix in safe mode so (hopefully) i can get all the spyware off my computer, but so far I've only run it in Normal mode. The "There are malicious programs on your computer" popup near the corner of my desktop have stopped (think they were from the OS warning me, but who knows), but I still want to be 100% sure that I got everything off. I also have McAfee, Avast, and Spybot installed, and they say the computer's clean.

Basically, I just want to figure out why my computer freezes up when logging into Safe Mode.

slows down ur system a bit

If both have no problem in between there is no problem except a bit slowness
You might consider uninstalling your least favorite of these two to avoid any conflict between them.

I usually try and stick to the same manufacturer to cause the least amount of conflict, most products by one maker are compatible with each other. and you really dont need two antivirus programs...one plus a good spyware and ad blocker and a firewall would be sufficient
Well I recommend you to keep just one antivirus software installed in your PC and if you want additional Protection with the antivirus. Install some Firewall ( ZoneAlarm Firewall ) is the Best !!! Avast is Better than Stopzilla or you can go for AVG Antivirus which is also available for free
It's ok, just don't run them both at the same time.
one or the other is a good answer. If u like, keep both of these programs, then you could disable one of them and keep the other running. Then next week, swap them around. My advice is get rid of stopzilla and just use avast. Its pretty good as far as freeby av software goes.

I accidently deleted 3 system files with my virus scanner?

I was using Avast, 2 of the files were used for restore points so now I can't restore to an earlier time. My computer is running really, really slow. Can I undo the delete?

I accidently deleted 3 system files with my virus scanner?antivirus software

If indeed you deleted the files the last thing you want is to Restore them. If they are Restore points that only means the virus has been on your machine for a while.

Download Spybot (free), Install it and Run it.

In Spybot, Mode, Advanced, Tools, System Startup, Uncheck items you don't what or need running. If you are unsure clicking on suspect items will provide some info on what the file is. Removing some of the items may cause Applications or windows features not to work, so check out what you've done after disabling and don't remove too many items at once.

Download Adaware (free), Install it and Run it

Click Start, Run, type %temp%, delete all of the files/folders it displays.

Open IE, Tools, Internet Options, Delete Cookies, Delete Files (check Offline as well)

Good Luck

I accidently deleted 3 system files with my virus scanner?computer virus

It may be that you haven't deleted them from your computer. Go to a command prompt and type:

sfc /scannow
Well hopefully they were just Quarantined. Look for the quarintine section and Restore the 2 files. But it sounds like you got some virus issues if you are movin real slow. A restore point file wouldnt slow your computer down.

I like Active Virus Shield. A lot. Don't let the AOL name scare you. Active Virus Shield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, Active Virus Shield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

Full test chart is here:

Active Virus Shield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb ram)

THIS IS WHAT YOU DO..

DO A SEARCH FOR MSVIDEO.DLL

DO NOT ERASE THE ONE THAT HAS SYSTEM AT THE END OF IT THIS IS A GOOD FILE..

IF YOU TRY TO DELETE IT AND IT SAYS FILE IS IN USE YOU NEED TO DO IT IN SAFE MODE..

TO GET INTO SAFE MODE RESTART YOUR COMPUTER AND HOLD F8 BEFORE THE WINDOWS SCREEN POPS UP..

ONCE IN SAFE MODE SEARCH FOR THE MSVIDEO.DLL FILE AGAIN AND DELETE IT..

RESTART YOUR COMPUTER AGAIN IN NORMAL MODE AND IT SHOULD BE GONE..

DO NOT DOWNLOAD ALL THESE SPYWARE PROGRAMS. HALF OF THEM WONT FIND THE TROJAN BECAUSE ITS HIDDEN AS A PROGRAM FILE.

What else would you suggest I install???

Spybot Search %26 Destroy and AdAware as good programs that will search for adware and spyware and will help you to get rid of it. These are programs that you need to make sure to update and run every once in a while, I think that they might be able to be set up to run automatically.

Be careful about the types of things that you download from the internet, use common sense and you should not have any real trouble.

The most important this is that you need to make sure that you keep these programs up to date. If they are out of date, they will not be able to protect your computer the way that it should be protected.

Avast is pretty good, but I prefer the following. AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from the following link. http://www.computeractive.co.uk/ On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps.
You may need a combination of them or choose the best one to secure your computer.

Second, boot the computer into Safe Mode (press the F8 key repeatedly during boot up until you get a menu screen with Safe Mode as an option) Run a spyware scanner in Safe Mode. It can remove files that would be in use in normal mode. Reboot the PC to return to normal mode.

Problem with internet connection>?

before, whilst i was on the net suddenly every few seconds, the connection would be lost (like when you turn off your mdoem) this kept happening for all my browsers until it was totally cut off. msn was working fine, i checked my firewall and the app was allowed. all my programs slowly began to freeze and so i system restored. and when i turned my computer backon, avast detected a worm/malware from ares folder in ____.dll, and i moved to chest, was that the cause of the connection%26gt;

yes more than likely that was. I would recommend going to spywareguide.com and then tools - free online scan as well - definitely sounds like spyware/adware infection and could be others as well. Do some scans and searches to see what you can dig up.

Problem with internet connection%26gt;?free anti virus

i thinking the connection ur using must be dial-up-connection,

if ur using dsl line then reset the modem and reinstall the driver is not installed properly,

or check ur IP address it will be in automatic mode change it to fix IP address which is given to u by the internet provider
spyware/malware will hog bandwidth as it uploads/downloads whatever data packet it is configured/programmed to do..

chances are you were a part of some DDOS bot network that is mass emailing people etc..

Need help with Active Virus shield.?

im thinking of switching from avast to AVS, but i want to know somethings first.

I tried the 30 day trial of kaspersky on my computer, and it made my internet extremely slow. it would take about a minute just to go on an ordinary website, and when i exit kaspersky, my internet would become fast again. i was wondering if the same thing would happen with avs. also other than a virus scan and realtime protection what other features does it have?

Need help with Active Virus shield.?computer repair

KAV and KIS both have a Web-Shield which scans all incoming HTTP traffic on Port 80. Any Web-Shield on any anti-virus tends to slow browsing down. Many people consider it superfluous and shut it down compleatly. All files get scanned by the file scanner anyway. AVS does not have web-shield.

AVS is KAV minus Web-shield, Proactive Defence Module (PDM) and the ability to exclude from scanning user defined folders.

I like Active Virus Shield. A lot. Made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world. Best of all it's free.

(6mb ram)

Beginner needs help with technical spyware stuff?

So i used to have Trend Micro PCcyllin (?) and the subscription has run out and i was wanting a new protection that is free. Since the subscription has expired, my comp has been playing up a little bit, so i need to fix it ASAP. I have no idea about the programs i need to stop viruses and that kind of thing. I have tried looking around, but spyware, cookies, adware........... it means nothing to me. Then i read answers and people are saying that you need a couple of different programs??

At the moment i have Avast on acess scanner installed, but i dont even know what that does!

Can anyone tell me everything i need to download, so that it stops all the bad virus, spyware, cookies..... and my comp runs smoothly?

if the game laged when you play, its not your web browser. do you have an video card in the vga or pci slot or is it on board? if its not on board, (one of those) just turn off your comp and unplug em and plug it back in. if that doesnt work, its probably cus your video settings are feked. check em out in display, u may need a different bit or resolution. who knows though, u may have a major virus attack.

Question on free virus removal programs?

Why are my programs such as avast! and trendmicro pc-cillin unable to delete viruses which it finds? Will I be able to delete them if I purchase the full version? Or will the same thing happen (detection without the ability to remove)?

Question on free virus removal programs?computer

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

Question on free virus removal programs?free spyware

Scan again and try and remove in safe mode.

In general, Windows does not allow the deletion of files when they are in use. However, Safe Mode will only load a minimum amount of drivers and services to run Windows, making removal a better bet. Scan again and attempt to delete while your computer is in safe mode.

To access Safe Mode, reboot then repeatedly press the F8 key at the first screen. When finished removing that pesky pest, reboot again to return to normal mode.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from the following link. http://www.computeractive.co.uk/... On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps
I recommend you to reinstall your Operating System.

But if you don't want to, you can use several software to clean your computer. Try to use CCleaner, it clears useless files, repaires bad registries. http://www.ccleaner.com/

Had to do an HP/Compaq recovery - what will I have lost?

Okay, so my PC just up and died on me. I CAD'd it and noted that CPU usage was at 100% (odd considering this is a bumming marvelous PC, and quite new). I did a full system recovery/reboot, and was expecting to lose info. All the defaults have changed, my user account has been deleted, wallpaper and layout is different, programmes that were installed with the PC when I bought it (and uninstalled by me later, such as replacing Norton with Avast) are somehow back on it, even though I deleted them from the hard drive. This is extremely confusing to me.

I'm delighted to notice I havn't lost any work (I'm in Uni and all my notes are on here, as are my own pieces of 'work' - i'm a songwriter and photographer) but some stuff is deffinately different - I just wish I could put my finger on it!

What is likely to have changed? How can I prevent this from happening again?

Please help a girl who just nearly had a coronery when her entire world (computer) decided to flirt with death!

Had to do an HP/Compaq recovery - what will I have lost?ducati

It sounds like you did a system restore, not a recovery. A recovery on an HP involves first creating recovery media, such as CDs or DVDs, then restoring the PC from that media. When you do a recovery from that type of media, you lose everything that was on the drive - programs you installed, files you created, etc.

Is it virus or monitor problem?

I keep seeing a bar in the middle of the screen trying to adjust the brightness/contrast of the monitor. It keeps doing it randomly and the value will go from 0 to 100 or vice versa. I suspect it is a virus but anti virus program (avast) fails to detect it. Any idea what is happening?

Is it virus or monitor problem?free adware remover

Possible virus try downloading AVG and running a scan with the free version it will catch more than avast and leave it in for a while as it has a resident shield that will catch something trying to run without permission that should take care of a virus problem . If the problem continues try using another monitor . good luck

Is it virus or monitor problem?internet security 2006

Try that monitor in another comp just to confirm if the monitor is the problem. If it works well from another machine, then the problem could be your computer. If it behaves the same in the 2nd comp, then your monitor might be the problem.

It is always good to confirm if you have the right display drivers in your comp. You might need to go to the net to update the ones you already have.

Also if you have installed any new software or hardware of late, uninstall and see how the comp behaves- hardware or software changes sometimes cause such problems.
There is no virus that can adjust the brightness and contrast of the monitor. Probably it's just the menu buttons on your monitor being loose and/or having problems.

Is it OK to run two antivirus softwares simultaneously?

I'm currently using Avast 4 Home Edition and NOD32 from ESET Antivirus software on NEC my laptop. Is there any conflict or will it harm or cause my laptop to slow down?

Is it OK to run two antivirus softwares simultaneously?free anti virus

NO

2 AV will conflict with each other, stick with AVAST

Is it OK to run two antivirus softwares simultaneously?internet security software

You should not run 2 AV programs simultaneously. In some instances, they WILL conflict or "fight" each other for control.
No my advice would be to stick with Avast anti-virus and only stick with one product at a time to avoid conflicts and prevent resource problems
Absolutely not!

They will get in each other's way and you will have "issues". Take one off and just run with one. Yes - lots of slowdowns. They might even detect that the other is a virus and do quarantine work.
#1 question..WHY? If you don't trsut one, use the other. If you don't trsut either, use a different one. I cannot see any logical reason, why you would want to do it
Only use one anti-virus product. Running more than one can cause conflicts thus rendering each ineffective.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav...
You probably want Norton Antirvirus, great virus protection. Check it out
It wont slow down, but it will probably run into some problems, or skip over some files. you should always go with 1 antivirus, 1 antispam, 1 firewall.
You don't need 2 AV's - Nod32 is far better than Avast 4 Home Edition so delete Avast 4 Home Edition %26 your computer will speed up.

My system got slowdown after installing multiple antivirus and spyware software?

I have installed avast and norton antivirus and Spybot Destroy,Ad Adware, SECcleaner soft ware.My system taking to much time to boot up.

My system got slowdown after installing multiple antivirus and spyware software?free antivirus download

Yes, this is a normal result of having security software like an anitvirus on your computer. The software must constantly update it files and signatures. All this information is logged in your computer. The majority of the information is placed in your registry.

When your antivirus performs a scan. It produces a log. This log can be up to 100 megabytes of information each. The registry holds all this info. The addition of the info is not the major problem. Its that the information is placed in many places in your registry. This causes fragmentation of files. Your computer's operating system must search through the massive files in the registry constantly. If the registry is error-filled, fragmented, or bloated with unnecessary and duplicate files, you will have major slowdown. Organize and keep it maintained, the problem will most likely be solved. You can scan to see the condition of your registry and see what resources you can unlock resources.

http://www.delete-computer-history.com/w...

Also you should try to see what processes are loaded when your computer starts. Often the antivirus will check your email, scan, and even update at the same time. This may be occuring everytime you start up your PC. These acts can last as long as 3 hours. They may be running silently in the background without your knowledge. Maintain them by following the directions below or by tweaking the settings in your antivirus:

Antivirus/firewall help?

I recently got internet (finally) and I am looking for the best firewall and antivirus/anti-spy protection, preferably a free download if it's good. Here's some I looked at on PC World: avast, avg, a-squared, ad-aware, jetico. I also already had windows defender, yahoo anti-spy, and live onecare safety scanner. Are any of these any good? Also when I bought the laptop years ago it came with mcafee and norton but they are the old (2002) versions. would they be worth keeping? I have heard that Norton slows pcs down, which i don't want, and that you should only have one antivirus program running. is this true and if so, why? I don't do much more online than surf for fun, email, and once in awhile order stuff, so it isn't exactly high profile but I want to be safe. Any help would be appreciated!

Antivirus/firewall help?free antivirus

Dump the Norton and the McAfee, they will be useless as they are way out of date. I would definitely uninstall both.

Norton can be hard to uninstall completely. If you have a problem, download and run the Norton Removal Tool from the Norton / Symantic website.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsg...

Windows defender, yahoo anti-spy, and live onecare safety scanner are all pretty mediocre performers.

I am guessing that a computer that old has very little RAM. You probably would want to use a "light" firewall.

How come my computer keeps restarting?free spyware remover

Random restarts/reboots/resets/crashes/freezes could be due to several reasons, including overheating, RAM, hardware issues, etc. Just do the following and post back with the info so that we can narrow it down some.

Try rebooting(restarting) in safe mode = http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsaf... , then go to control panel/ system / advanced Tab/ startup and recovery box/ settings button/ sytem failure and uncheck "restart on system failure" ( take the check out of automatically restart box ) , and check the Write a system event, and the Admin alert boxes (check "send admin alert"). This will force a BSOD on the next crash (freezes/restarts = crashing) that posts the Stop Error Code. On the next crash write down the exact Stop Error Code and post that exact error in Yahoo and/orGoogle search, and in the MS Support Knowledge Base (KB) = to check it out.-

http://support.microsoft.com/search/?adv... + http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316416

Also go to your device manager (devmgmt.msc) and check the properties and look for anything suspicious and check that the settings are where they should be. Events and Errors Message Center = http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support...

What is the best to use, an all in one security centre or separate anti virus, spyware, adware programe?free spyware

The reality is that anti-virus and firewall programs alone are not enough to protect you against many types of hacker tools and other cyber-attacks. Even using both a firewall and anti-virus together, you are still vulnerable to spyware, Trojan horses, remote access tools (RATs), password crackers, keystroke loggers, and much more.

Just as important, anti-virus and firewall programs do not provide you with critical security patches for your computer software. Microsoft issued thousands of security patches to their operating systems and other software last year. How many of those patches did you apply to your own computer? How many software security holes do you still have in your Windows operating system, Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet Explorer, etc? Closing these well-known security holes is imperative to keep hackers and the new hybrid worms off your computer.

You need more than just your anti-virus program or a firewall; you need a comprehensive security solution for your PC if you don't want hackers, viruses and worms on your system invading your privacy.

And if you ever have a security problem with your PC, who would you call? You will pay a small fortune to get help from any of the cheap off-the-shelf security programs. Those products are not made to provide a total solution, rather just a piece of a good overall protection strategy.
