Any number of reasons:

Music CDs - if the format is not recognized, then the scanner often sees a virus.

Sometimes there are software attachments and playable games/videos on Music CDs - these can be a vehicle for viral infection.

Many older CDs or ones from Classical tracks are usually squeaky clean.

What happens is that unscrupulous music publishers put virus into a hidden track as a punishment for attempting to copy their intellectual property - quite cruel really!

One draw back to avast is when it does not find anything of suspicious nature, it will simply "go away" without letting you know the results. In your case, it is extremely rare for music to contain a virus. It takes seconds to scan music because there is no hidden code with music, unless you are working with MP4 (mac based media formats). So you may not even see it (especially if there only like 20 songs).
When you insert the CD hold down the LEFT shift key. Keep holding it down until the CD drive stops scanning the disc. This will prevent the Auto Play from starting. Then go to your My Computer and select the CD drive and right click it and select explore. Then you should see a list of the files on the disc and be able to scan them.

Goddamn the Fear Vista has put in people, dont be so cautious, it makes using the computer less fun, make sure you scan your computer in regular intervals, but don't scan everything you put on your computer

2. About the Avast problem, idk what to tell you, try getting into the program without just clicking Scan, and do a full system scan, if all else fails re-install it
