Shortcut menu (right mouse click on drive) in PC shows "Open__ "?

is that a sign that the pc has been infected by a virus? i came across some viruses that changes the "Open" to jibberish... Avast does not detect any virus or trojan though... can i rely on that?

Most probably it is a virus . If on double clicking the drive you go to "My Documents" or some place u should not be then its surely a virus. A foolproof way of checking it would be to change somethings. I'm assuming u are having Windows XP. Open My Cmputer . Go to Tools in the top menu. then go to Folder Options. In the "view" tab. select this option :

1.Show hidden files and folders

And unselect this option :

1.Hide Protected OS files

it'll prompt u for confirmation. don't worry just click on ok

now click on the drive icon and select explore or type c: d: etc any one in the address bar and go to the drive . if u find any suspicious exe file and a ".inf" file . Bingo u got it. open the inf file and u'll find the open="somevirus name" first use an antivirus to remove the virus then delete these inf files . restart and ur drives will be fine.

As u have already mentioned about avast. it might be a pretty harmless virus . like one i had encountered . all u need to do is go to task manager and end the process of that virus . u can identify it by the file name and then just delete all the virus files. also u may consider updating the virus definitions if not already done.

Not all virus/adwares/worms can be filtered by Avast.

Why don't you scan your computer with other antivirus program to see if it helps.

Else you'll have to find someone to configure certain parts of your computer check the drivers %26 patch up some parts.

My friend's laptop got the same case like yours.

I did a series of tasks to make it work again but I'm not sure how to explain it to you. It's best if you can get an IT person to assist you. ;)
