Is there any way i can stop this security toolbar 7.1 getting into my pc?free spyware remobal

You might try this remover made specifically for that product.

Also some manual removal instructions there.

http://www.adwarealert.com/glossary_deta...
I don't think you have gotten rid of it completely, because it is coming back.

You should use adaware and start a scan. Then use symantec antivirus. Run full system scans. This worked for me.
difficult this one...the security toolbar keeps coming back through your updates off microsoft and even though you think it,s gone it is one off those programs that just sit in the background..answer before about going into msconfig is good and you can try regedit or add/remove programs.I would turn off your automatic updates and get rid of your virus software and download AVGfree and scan pc using that if it is a trojan as mentioned before, confine it to vault..

2001 toshiba,windows me?

Under add and remove programs, I have tryed to unstall mcafee,I now have Avast FREE. Mcafee is so embeded in toshibas version of me.I could find the file in my computer and mabe crash things, it still shows up in run- browse.poor mcafee -I want to be rid them and their warnings-I could re install the disk under costom install, but do not know if I can exclude mcafee and its hidden components.

2001 toshiba,windows me?computer virus

If you do a clean install, you should be able to unstall Mcafee without a hitch. If it doesn't, you may be stuck with the conflicts.

ME is really not an optimal OS though. If I were you, I would run a system check on your computer to see if it could handle XP.

If it can (and it may not being 2001), I would install an upgrade of XP Home, which would run you between 100 and 200 dollars, and give you a much better OS.

I also use Avast Free on one of my laptops. I love it...simple, stays out of the way...hopefully it is doing a good job...doesn't seem to have let anything slip through yet.

IE7 & Firefox will not connect to broadband connection but AIM & Outlook will?

Sorry posted this b4 thought the prob got solved. My Firefox turns white and my IE7 has that dnserror thingy. Might had happen after i used my avast antivirus and deleted something. Is there anyway to get those files back to make the browsers work? please help!

IE7 %26 Firefox will not connect to broadband connection but AIM %26 Outlook will?computer

You probably have a conflict where a program is blocking your internet connection. Uninstall all your firewalls, including windows firewall. Reinstall them to restore all the files.

IE7 %26 Firefox will not connect to broadband connection but AIM %26 Outlook will?free spyware

I'm sorry to hear that you're having computer troubles and hope that I can help you fix the problems.

First off, I'd suggest that you try either uninstalling FireFox and then downloading it again. Once it's installed again, you should see if it works.

If that doesn't work, then maybe you should do a System Restore to a time when it last worked.

I'd like to with you luck and I hope I helped!

When using Avast anti-virus, it said a file can't be moved/deleted because the CAB archive is corrupted...

How Do I Remove IE Defender?

I was infected with this virus last night. I keep getting these pop-ups in IE that tell me I've been infected and then I am redirected to the IEDefender.com homepage. I have ran AVG Anti-Virus, Ad-Aware, Spyware Doctor, Spybot S%26D, Avast! Anti-Virus, Microsoft Defender, and my system comes up squeaky clean. I'm at wits end and I really don't want to have to resort to HiJackThis. I have Vista and I've tried searching for bDivX.dll and IR9V0_QCX.dll but with no luck. There was nothing in the registry, and I've scanned in Safemode as well. There is a free "removeIEDefender.exe" application that supposedly fixes the problem, but it isn't compatible with Windows Vista. HELP!

How Do I Remove IE Defender?download

It happened to me too...I'm using Vista. This is the problem file:

C:\Windows\System32\

IntelVideoDivX.dll

For me, the "date modified" on this file was exactly the time I got infected.

Just delete this bad file, or copy it to a memory stick and delete the file from the System32 folder. It worked for me and I haven't noticed any problems with any of my other applications (but I'll keep the IntelVideoDivX.dll file on a memory stick just in case).

Good luck.

My computer is dying! how can i speed up my computer without losing files?

I got my Latitude Laptop in January from a used shop; $399.

it was wiped by the company vending them, so no programs were installed. It worked almost-fine for about a month. now, it takes 5 minutes to log onto a user, even when i've removed almost all start-up programs other than Windows processes. I've scanned it with any virus and spyware software available, including avast!, McAfee, PC Tools, Norton, and others, removed the few programs they all found, and it still is slow. It seems to be spastic, running fine for five minutes, then sticks up for about half an hour, then starts working fine again. i've cleaned up the registry with every clean-up program i could find, gone through the processes in task manager (to no effect), and uninstalled the majority of programs that were of no use to me. i've pretty much lost all hope!

i want to see if there's a way to fix this up without buying a new computer.

My computer is dying! how can i speed up my computer without losing files?downloads

My suggestion, without buying new parts, would be to reinstall Windows, or if you're not too attached to Microsoft, Linux. It'll allow your machine to run more programs at once because Linux makes better use of the hardware. From the Windows side, you could increase the size of your virtual memory (as a temp fix).

With new hardware, I'd say to get some more RAM. You'd be amazed at how much faster a system can run with just 128 MB more RAM.

.tmp virus?

i have a file in my temp folder called 101.tmp ( it changes name on reboot) and i am informed it contains a trojan. i have run avast in safe mode and tried a system restore ( and tried that in safe mode) the restore does not work and the av does not remove it any ideas

Hi there,

Here's some detailed information on 101.TMP which is part of the "About:Blank" infection:

The best and easiest way to remove this is by installing the Free Trial of Prevx1. This will scan your PC and remove this and any other infections free of charge.

Helpero is a web site that helps every Internet user, from all over the world, solve any computer related problem. You can ask Helpero for free.
Go to pandasoftware.com and do a free virus scan online. This will get rid of viruses on your computer.

Then find CCleaner online and download free. Run that and clean out all the junk and temp files that accumulate on a computer. .

Then make sure you've got free avg 7.5 and lavasoft adaware, also free.

What's the best anti-virus program?

Which is the best? Norton, Avast or what?

Thanks

What's the best anti-virus program?firewall

Get Avast Free Edition, which gets you a lot for nothing, it's even better than some paying anti-virus software, like Norton. And Avast won SC Magazine's 2006 award. For anti-spy ware protection get Spybot S %26 D. Look at the comparison between paying Anti-spyware software at http://spywarewarrior.com/asw-features.h... it's amazing. Plus make sure your Windows Firewall is on.

For extra protection:

If you want to eliminate the advertisements and pop-ups get Mozilla Firefox, it's safer than Internet Explorer. Then in Mozilla add-ons look for and download Ad-Block Plus , which blocks 99% of advertisements to all websites. Then get NoScript, which allows Javascript, Java, and other plug-ins only for trusted domains of your choice and prevents exploitation of security vulnerabilities and eliminate third party cookies! Plus NoScript won the 2006 PC World World Class Award. Then get McAfee SiteAdvisor, it warns you if the site you are going on is safe or dangerous, and let's you view the site report on Siteadvisor.com. If you get all this, you'll be surfing the web smarter %26 safer.

I like Norton..
Free: I have heard from most people either NOD32 or AVG.

Non-Free: Kaspersky, Norton, or bitdefender
I use norton antivirus 2007

I've had no probs with norton in 4 years
NOD32
Norton is the best but it also consumes lot of system resource. If your system is superfast then definately go for Norton. If you want performance on your old system then AVG is the solution.

AVG is out there which is one of the best anti-virus program these days.

Hope this helps.

Keyboard problem or virus-infected pc?

Virus causing keyboard problem?internet security

The answer is no. virus can not make some keys multifunction unless otherwise all keys. try to use different keyboard or if its laptop try to use external keyboard. i think its a problem of keyboard itself.
reboot and try a different keyboard.
when i run into anything that i think may be a virus that can not be eradicated by the antivirus software, i always go thro the system recovery with the disks that came with the computer. what happens is your computer goes back to right when it first came out of the box and is cleared of anything that could be harmful. i save any data i dont want to lose to an external hard drive and just start over!! some of the viruses are so lethal i don't want to waste any time and allow it to be on there any longer than necessary.

Virtual Daemon/Daemon Tools should work fine, you need to mount the disc image and this includes those files. Right click on the icon in the bottom disc tray, go to a drive, click on mount image and find the mds or mdf files. I think mds is what you need. That should be it.

You can go to a command prompt and type msconfig. Then, select the STARTUP tab. Uncheck the ones you don't want running.
right click, delete.
Click Start%26gt;Run%26gt;Type msconfig%26gt;Startup%26gt;uncheck any unwanted programs%26gt;ok%26gt;yes%26gt;Restart Computer
In the Start Menu click "Run" then type "msconfig" and go to the startup tab and uncheck all programs you do not want to start.
You can remove them by going to START / RUN and typing MSCONFIG then clicking OK.

Go to the STARTUP tab and it will list everything that loads on startup and allow you to disable them.

Can't say I Reccomend doing that though.. why are you trying to disable your A/V protection?
just right click on them and select remove from start menu
right click and press delete
1. Go to start/all programs/startup

2. Right click on the programs you don't want to run when your computer starts and click delete.

Why is my laptop so slow?

its been running slow since i installed zone alarm, avast virus protection i also am running spy sweeper . whats the problem

You don't have enough memory to run them all at once. I would get ride of some alarm. I know it's good but I wouldn't bother

Why is my laptop so slow?ktm

Yes mate, i shall tell you why. First of all try to minimize the number of processes (or programs) your computer is running on startup, run disk defrag and disk cleanup and disk check to see problems and clear your hard drive, the less programs u use the more faster your pc will be
Probably not enough RAM to handle all the programs. Some programs are just memory hogs.
Personally I would get rid of Zone Alarm and Avast, and replace them with Computer Associates E-Z Armor Internet Security Suite. Spy Sweeper is a pretty good anti-spyware program, but you might consider adding a few more good ones: Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Spyware Doctor.

task manager shows IE IS running but the browser window won't open. all other non-internet apps work fine, but i can't shut down or re-start from the START menu (alternately, it takes several minutes to shut down). turning off manually and powering up again usually resolves problem, until the next time it happens. i've removed all programs i downloaded just prior to this mess and switched anti-virus (from Avast to AVG). no effect, no viruses. upgrading to IE 7 made no diff. i'm using an Acer Aspire 3634WLMi with Celeron M 380 .

Clicking on desktop IE icon occasionally won't open browser window but appears to run. also can't shut down.hijackthis

I think the either the whole windows or just internet explorer is corrupt. You will need to properly uninstall it, restart and then install new IE. One more reason may be...the system is infected with Spyware or malware. Download some quality antispyware from http://www.pcsecurityworld.com/antispywa... and run a check. You can try resetting IE to its default settings and see if that resolves the issue. Better would be to stop using IE and switching to either Firefox or to IE based browsers. Both are available at http://www.pcsecurityworld.com main page.

Clicking on desktop IE icon occasionally won't open browser window but appears to run. also can't shut down.malware

Did you run your anti-virus and anti-spy in Safe Mode? Click F8 continually while booting to get Safe Mode. If you see Windows flag shut off and reboot as you have gone too far. When you get to Safe Mode lay mouse on generic icons until you see the anti software and run it. Slow but worth it. Good luck. Also, try Firefox instead of IE.

I don't care for the firewall that comes with xp I would recommend http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ I have been using it since it first came out and haven't had too many problems with it.

Windows firewall?matchless

I recommend install another one. Zone alarm pro is the best i would say. The security in there is not of any good at all.

Anyway best of luck mate
I run Comodo alongside the hardware firewall in my router with no problems. Any review will tell you Windows firewall is very basic.
you shouldnt have two firewalls running as they conflict each other but i use commodo firewall as well as windows firewall and not had a problem and commodo firewall is very good not had a single problem with it
The major problem with Windows firewall is that it has no outbound application filtering. Should a trojan or another malware decide to "phone-home" to the attacker, Windows firewall would let it out without warning you. Not even a peep.

The best one that I found in the av-co-opertives website is Avira Antivir, Eset, and Kaspersky rating the higest antivirus programs. Only thing is they tested an older version of AVG so that kind of make it unfair in my opinion, since, 7.5 is definatly improved over 7.1
That's just the thing, everyone will have a different opinion. You've got to decide for yourself what is best for YOU. What is best for you may not be the best for someone else, although they will try to convince you otherwise.
personally, im a HUGE fan of NORTON
Peronsally i have AVG 7.5 and it works magnificently. I had /norton before and a new cirus slipped into my computer but i was able to recover somethigns when i got AVG! I stay with AVG because it let you know when a new update is available unliek other where it will tell you every two weeks "if" somethign new is up.
Those are all good choices I prefer AVG. Also get avg's antispyware

1. For your Anti-Virus.........................

I like the AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/defa...

AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.

Updates many times per day to detect new malware.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

An excellent free firewall is Comodo Personal Firewall. It can pass firewall "leak tests" that even most of the "paid-for" firewalls cannot pass.

You need to try a registry cleaner to clean you PC.

Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer you create junk in the registry. You need to scan and clean your PC with registry cleaner. It is a powerful and useful tool to elinimate to the clutter and junk that builds up in your PC's registry from installing and removing programs, creating and deleting files and surfing online.Without regular system tune鈥搖ps, it's very likely your computer will slow, crash, full of error messages, leaving you with a costly computer鈥搈echanic bill and lost data.

-ad aware, spybot, are antispywares, they do not have realtime scanner, so you can use any number of programs that do not have a real time scanner.

-about spysweeper , if it has a realtime protection, you can keep it as it will be the only antispyware on your computer with real time protection.

-System Mechanic7 , (If you are using professional version of it then you do not need another antivirus, so either keep this one or avast, as far as I can see, you should keep Avast antivirus, as it is more advanced antivirus, if you are using its regular version without an antivirus then you can remove spysweeper. IF you decide to remove SM7 instead then To compensate the features of SM7 you can get ccleaner)

Help Appreciated, Windows Problem?

When I first boot up my computer, and everything in the system tray has loaded.

If I click on a program, my computer, firefox, music, anything!

It says I do not have the right privledges to access them.

I am the administrator, and I think a virus/reg file has caused this to happen, but i have scanned my computer with Spybot, Adaware and Avast.

Once I wait about 20 seconds. It comes good and everything works.

But thats not the point, it shouldnt come up with those messages in the first place.

Any Ideas to what could be causing this problem.

Only happens once first booted (from a cold start), and it has happened ever since I bought a $40 wireless USB PC Lock (Brand Name 'Laser'), Which I uninstalled and did a system restore because I think it is the cause of it!

Help much appreciated.

Help Appreciated, Windows Problem?live update

There may be a program that is running during startup that is causeing your computer to hang, try starting up in safe mode (f8 at boot) and see if it also occurs in safe mode... Than go from there, this is a tricky situation and there are many things that could cause this, I am just trying to point you in the right directioin.

Help Appreciated, Windows Problem?norten

Are you running Vista? I've had similar problems on Vista computers. It seems to be that on startup pretty much all the resources are used and it takes a short time for resources to become available to run programmes. I get messages saying the programme can't be found, a message cannot be displayed, something or other needs installing.

As with yourself, a few seconds later and everything is fine. Maybe your problem is similar in that Windows hasn't fully started up and you're trying to run commands that aren't yet active.

Excuse the lack of technical jargon, not a computer expert.

Should I system restore as an antivirus solution?

Recently my computer has been running extremely slow. My virus and spyware scans (avast, adaware, zonealarm spyware scan, counterspy, microsoft malicious software removal toool) turned up about eight or so problems. My computer is running slightly faster now, but it is still a lot slower than it was a few days ago. I have heard some people say that system restore is a good idea, but others have said its not. What do you all recommend?

Should I system restore as an antivirus solution?liveupdate

Do this first: Update your anti-virus program with the latest virus definitions. Then reboot into Safe Mode and run your anti-virus program for a complete check. Based on what you said, you probably will find a problem(s) which you can then take care of. BUT, assuming that some virus or trojan is found, chances are that it has also infected your system restore points. So, you really need to go to the system restore window and check the box that says "Turn Off System Restore On All Drives". What that does is delete all the previous restore points, all of which are probably infected anyway. Then run your antivirus in Safe Mode again, and when all is clear, reboot and then go back to System Restore and uncheck that box. Hope this helps.

How long does a system restore take?

Have been infected by Trojan Downloader. It is lodged in dllhost.exe, a vital part of Windows, so cannot be dislodged. Virus does not appear to be downlaoding anything but the same 5 files every day. avast! stays on top of it but PC is not running quite right. Will system restore help and if so, how long will it take?

How long does a system restore take?malware

You may need to switch off System Restore as back up files may be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.

Run your anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

You need to install one firewall.

The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.

http://www.zonelabs.com Zone Alarm firewall OR

http://www.comodogroup.com/ - Comodo firewall.

You need all these anti spyware programs;

http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.

http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

i dunno, you have done everything i'd do. Did you try starting your comp in safe mode( Assuming you use windows) and then running all scans to delete it.? ALso, try to avoid sending it to recyclebin when deleting( I think adaware and spybot have this option)

Last resort, get hijackthis. Run a scan ( Not in safe mode) and upload the log to one of the forums.

Ah! And get rid of all bho's and extensions by starting mozilla in safe mode. if you got any from a non-trustworthy source.

Is this a virus?

Recently I downloaded a virus from Limewire. I downloaded avast! antivirus, updated the database and ran it. I found Win32 trojan, and a few other things, and deleted them. The problem was that when I would open IE, my homepage would open, along with another page that would open by itself. It went from an ebay search of fishing rods to a blog site. When I ran the software last night, everything was running smoothly. This morning, it's acting up again. I ran the software and didn't find anything. What could this be, and how can I remove it?

Is this a virus?mcaffee

This is not a problem at all. Here's what you need to do.

1st, don't waste your time with AVG, true sword, spybot, ad aware, CA, spyhunter, superantispyware, avast, panda, kaspersky, spyware blaster, bitdefender, spyware guard, windows defender or anything of the sort. Stay away from anything that is FREE when it comes to spyware and antivirus. There is a reason why they free. They are NOT good.

2nd, You need some of the best software out there. Norton Systemworks is very good. That's the only good software from Norton. I wouldn't recommend Norton Internet security, its not that great. Now the best software you should get is Webroot AntiVirus With AntiSpyware %26 Firewall, formally known as Webroot's Spysweeper with Anti-virus, this software is too good and gets better everyday. This is Elite software. It blocks over 455,000 definition threats, which contain multiple fringerprints with each(you can do the math). No other software can compete with that or come close for that matter. It catches everything: viruses, spyware, adware, malware, root kits, keyloggers, trojans, worms, and anything else. It also has active shields and a Firewall which learns from your useage. I've used them all and it is 2nd to none.

You think ad-aware se personal edition 1.06 is good?

it isnt same as avast right?

You think ad-aware se personal edition 1.06 is good?microsoft office

If you have the right version of Avast with the Anti virus, and run Adaware weekly, then ye you should be cool.

This is exactly what I run mate and have had no probs so far.

I have tried various anti viruses, from norton to Mcaffee and bitdefender, and none have been as good as Avast.

I also run Nod32 which is excellent and never tampers or bothers any other anti virus which a lot of others progs do.

Please be aware though that adaware (personnal, not proffesional) is only a virus scanner and doesn't defend you from viruses. It just finds "most" of theones you "may" have come across.

You think ad-aware se personal edition 1.06 is good?norton antivirus

wouldn't be without it.
The more anti-spyware programs you run, the better. This is because no one program will detect all malware.

I would also recommend Spybot search and destroy, another respected (free) product.

Be wary of downloading security software that you have never heard of, it may contain malware in itself.
It's a good program. I use it with AVG and THIS:

http://www.download.com/PC-Tools-Firewal...
It works ok and its free, like all spyware the best stuff is the stuff you pay for.
I think ad-aware is excellent but since having webroot spysweeper it hardly ever finds anything and that goes for spybot as well.
It's good.^_^
I run thsi programme and it finds far more than Norton or Spyware Doctor put together and i am only using the FREE version
Dang if I know
Adaware is the best I have encountered out there. It is more accurate than Windows Defender, and the Yahoo (toolbar) facility both put together.

If you keep Adaware updated, you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

However, it is not an ANTI-VIRUS program. You should use it in conjunction with something like Norton Antivirus, or any other dependable antivirus program.
Ad Aware SE Personal is very good.... it gets the virus... right off the computer, and tracks it fast.... i think the AD AWARE is better, I have it and its the best!!

SpySweeper is great, but SuperAntiSpyware is better. I've used both before, now I only use SuperAntiSpyware. It's free and has no adwares.

well theres nothing up with avast continue to use it
Well my suggestion would be to download Spyware Doctor 5.1 Starter edition which is free and/or AVG antispyware which is totally free and are ranked one and two in detection. Most likely Phat_Ton is infected with loads of spyware and doesn't know it. SuperAntispyware is a great program for the very worst of the worst spyware and malware, but as far as general detection of low to medium risk malware and spyware it sucks. Just download one or both of these and you'll be fine:

My computer still is giving me problems.?

I had several good answers recently and tried some of them. I had already used Spyware and Adaware and tried to scan my hard drives and defrag. I am stopped from scanning C because it says something in Windows is running, and it won't defrag either. I downloaded Avast, and that worked great in that it found 2 Trojan Horses and 2 Worms. But I still can't download ErrorDoctor or upgrade Internet Explorer, and now every few minutes a Window box pops up saying the program has performed illegally. It has HPOSM in the top left corner of the box, but when I click OK on it, it doesn't shut me down like the usual illegal message box does. What is causing that, and why can't I download anything else, as the computer is still very, very slow. I also have a web page, and was told by my server that I should be using Internet Explorer 6. Since I haven't upgraded since 2003, I'm sure I don't have it. HELP!!

My computer still is giving me problems.?moto guzzi

I agree with the previous poster. You may want to try to run the scans in Safe Mode. Now since some of my suggestions may require you to access the internet, I suggest you go into Safe Mode with Networking. Then do the following.

A clean computer is key to a faster computer. Run the 3 scans below.

Run a virus scan weekly.

Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from CA.

Your computer is in danger! spyware/adware infection..HELP!!!?

it all happened when i tried to download a crack file..it infected my comp! i have 3 problems i need to solve.

1.my desktop background is now all black(altho desktop items are present) with a message at the bottom saying 'Your computer is in danger! Windows have detected spyware/adware infection etc'.

2.also i keep getting a message in the form of a balloon all the time saying 'your computer is infected! windows has detected spyware infection. you need specific spyware tools etc'

3.the other problem is, when i click ctrl+alt+del an error message says 'Task Manager has been disable by your administrator'..now im sure my administrator hasnt disabled anything, i think its the spyware/adware/virus thats doing this.

Finally, i have AVG Anti-spyware 7.5 and Avast antivirus installed. they detected several viruses and malware which i deleted, but still the above 3 problems are present. please HELP!!

Your computer is in danger! spyware/adware infection..HELP!!!?network security

Do as the first answer says, re-run your spyawre and virus scans with your computer in safe mode. If that does not clear out the infection then you need a more powerful anti-spyware program. The exact same thing happened to me last year except my screen went blue. I solved it with some expert help by installing CounterSpy anti-spyware. Have a look below, it tells the story.

Computer is crashing when I run anti-virus, Why?

I run Avast! anti-virus and half way through the scan my computer shuts down and says "Windows cannot start at this time. It can be a software or hardware issue. Run from last configuration, start now, or something else...It's rather annoying and I would like to fix it without losing any data.

Computer is crashing when I run anti-virus, Why?nortan antivirus

It may have found a virus and tried to remove it. Start your computer up in Safe Mode (by hitting F8 during the boot process) and once in safe mode, rescan the computer for viruses. It should complete the scan.

Computer is crashing when I run anti-virus, Why?nortonantivirus

I had this problem a while back, i resulved this by having to do the following:

1) restart the computer

2) press F8

3) select "Safe Mode"

4) i then loged in as the administrator

5) i opened my anti-virus program and ran a scan, as this was in safe mode it doesnt restart your computer.

6) the anti-virus program should be able to complete the scan

6a) if it does not repeat then u most likly have a virus and it has gone into your system regestry, and changed something.

7) if the scan does complete then restart and let your computer boot the the log in screen( If you have it selected).

Windows Defender?

Hi, this is my security specifications:

Avast! anti-virus

ad-aware SE personal

Windows Defender

i was just wondering, is windows defender good, because it doesn't remove the bad tracking cookies. I used to have AVG anti-spyware but the trial expired. Then Somebody told me to use Windows Defender, it works but is it an ok anti-spyware program? I've heard of spybot search and destroy but it won't remove some spyware.

So just Wondering again is windows Defender good?

best answer will be chosen.

Windows Defender?nortan

Windows Defender is fair at scanning and removing spyware. But it does have real-time resident protection to PREVENT malware which is extremly rare in a free anti-spyware app. IMHO, for the price, Defender is a keeper.

If what you are most concerned about is Defenders lack of tracking cookie detection and removal capability, you can relax!!!!

Cookies are just small .txt (text) files that by themselves cannot hurt your computer. Cookies are "set" by almost every web-site that you visit, on every visit. You can delete all your cookies today and by tomorrow you will have dozens again just be visiting web-sites.

Cookies do not slow down a computer, at least the first million or so that you might have on your computer!

They are not a virus or spyware, BUT some people consider "tracking" cookies to be an invasion of privacy.

How can I delete .CAB files that are infected with a virus, even though the computer won't let

I several .CAB files that have Trojans in them, and when I use Avast antivirus, it won't let me move to chest, rename, delete, or repair the files. You have a couple of options. First, run the XP Malware Removal Program that is an XP update. Second, try another antivirus program like AVG, which is free. Third, try a spyware/adware remover program. Finally if you cannot remove the files and can't restart the program, install Linux try SUSE or Ubuntu Linux,so your system is a dual boot (XP and Linux), login as "root" in Linux and you will be able to go into the Windows partition and do what you like with those infected files. I have copied the files, renamed the old ones something I can remember and inserted the clean files into the proper Windows folder. You then restart your computer, oot into Windows and the contaminated files will be deletable. Of course after you do this, you should keep Linux around just in case--probably you will get tired of farting around with Windows and switch to Linux.
you can try system restore. what it dose it your computer sets restore points at set times or when somehting major happens. so you want to pick a restore point that is before the time you got the trojans then restore(this is if you recently discovered them and/or dont mind deleting everytying you did back to a previous date)

Mcfee slows down your computer much more than AVG will ever. It been well know that it's been to turn faster computers into slow computer. It will cost you at least $30 with savings according Mcfee website. Even though it's a good virus killer, many people think that AVG is much better and I tend to agree. You could save at least $30 by using a combination of programs. My personal favorite is AVG for it's real time protection and for the ability to create boot disks. It is also has scheduled scans or updates automatically as well. My other one that I use is Personal Ad-Aware SE, which has the best virus killing ability than even Mcfee. In combination with these others, I use Zone alarm firewall which is free and prevents viruses all together. With AVG, Zone alarm, and Ad-Aware, you could have a best bet of having no viruses on your computers. I also suggest that you get firefox as well because it more secure than Internet Explorer and you can easily delete cookies when you leave the program. See download.com for more details.

Ok as I stated in previous questions, I had a trojan, I went in Safe Mode, and used www.trojanhunter.com. All it could dig up was minor adware by Morpheus. Second question

The best Trojan removing program is ewido. I recommend you use both these programs and the procedure. After the removal procedure is additional infor about Antivirus programs.

Download AdAware SE and update. Do the setup. Do not run:

AdAware SE Setup:

2. Select the "tweak" option. Under "scanning engine," make sure "unload recognized processes and modules during scan" is enabled. Enable "scan registry for all users instead of current users."

It is not a tradition signature based anti-virus and is not intended to be a replacement for one. Threatfire should be used in ADDITION to a regular anti-virus to (hopefully) detect brand new zero-day threats which an anti-virus does not yet have a signature for yet , so it can not detect it yet.

Threatfire works by detecting unusual virus-like behavior, Not be matching a files "fingerprint" to a long list of infected files.

Threatfire is good at what it does, but don't un-install your regular protection.
It gets great reviews from critics. Better than the others? Hard to say, but it's at least as good. I have not used it, but have heard nothing bad about it either.
Threatfire is a companion to anti-virus. So install threatfire and an anti-virus program.
