I have 7.5 avg free edition, it is good..but it only remove viruses, it can't remove such things (i mentioned above) and has no firewall.

Remove spy doctor it is very laggy and will cause a lot of problems later and might even allow popups to appear. Switch over to Super Antispyware and Spybot search and destroy, run full scans with both, restart the pc and you are done.

AVG is overrated..
You actually need three programs for that.
1) Spyware, malware, etc.. download Spybot, this program catches and kills everything.
2) Internet hackers, etc.. thats where a firewall comes in, I strongly recommend ZoneAlarm Pro, great firewall. (By the way, you can download Spybot and this program at download.com)

As much as you may love Smiley Central, it's crawling with adware which is most likely why your Avast prompted the abort. If you must have them and Avast seems to be the culprit that is preventing the installation, uninstall Avast, install Smiley Central, and then reinstall Avast.

Hit "CTRL,Shift,ESC" and see what is running. If there is something there resembling BT or win32dialer, end the process, run the antivirus program again. If that doesn't work, start your computer in safe mode and run it again. This should work, because the best programs won't delete a running program.
You are going to have to find specific removal tools or instructions as it has probably modified the regisry.
Also have you tried running the virus scan in safe mode? If the files it uses are in use by windows then you will not be able to delete them.

You can either delete the trojan or move it to vault. Both options will be safe enough. A virus / trojan in the vault is completely harmless, as it stays isolated from your system.
Of course your Avast! and SpyBot are enough to 'deal' with the trojan, as Avast! has already detected it!

Ok heres my problem...I'm trying to install Java with ActiveX to play games on Pogo.com but my information bar will not drop for ActiveX so I can click on it to use Java. The only other things I would try is to completely uninstall Java and Internet Explorer. Then reinstall IE followed by Java. Report It
Your browser and or a firewall might prevent the downloading of objects. You could temporarily disable the the firewall to see if that makes any difference.

OK,this is getting really annoying, I've tried uninstalling all the programs I don't need, I run CCleaner daily, run virus scans with Avast! AVG Free and AVG anti-spyware. Its Microsoft Windows - it does that. Format %26 re-install. After your fresh install, take a system image using Ghost (or similar) - you'll need to re-install about every 6 months (on average).
Don't run conflicting anti-malware software. Use AVG Free for Windows viruses and SuperAntiSpyware for Windows spyware. Defrag daily.
You could to a windows format yes....that will make it somewhat faster...
check with your local technician about buying some more RAM (memory) for it.
Do Ctrl, Alt, Delete.
After the task manager pops up, click on the Processes tab. Right on the bottom, it should say the CPU usage of the processes listed.
If you look at the list, there will be a column called Mem Usage which has all sorts of values for different processes. Now, are there any processes which are using vast amounts of memory? If so, those may be slowing your computer so click on those and click End Task.

First you will want to disable system restore (and then once cleaned you can re-enable system restore and create a clean restore point - do this so as not to reinfect yourself later).
I would also close out of any programs running, background programs, etc... ctrl+alt+del (once) %26gt;%26gt; task manager %26gt;%26gt; highlight and end task on all but your antivirus and needed services (if not sure leave em alone).
If you are using antivirus from a RELIABLE vendor like McAfee.. you can force an update of the virus definitions (which should be automatically downloading and instaling) and then run a complete scan.. which will remove the malware.
If you do not have reliable antivirus (I strongly suggest getting it for future) you can do a web based scan from http://housecall65.trendmicro.com...
this is a free scan AND removal.. it will take a long time since it's either java or a small download but it will work in a pinch (unless in some rare cases the worm is able to disable it... which is doubtful).

ps. some malware that antivirus will catch while you are browsing the web has to be manually deleted from the temporary internet files folder.. this is because your browser is open and the malicious file is "in use".. so you have to first close out of the browser (carefully) and delete the file.. if it still says in use, reboot to safe mode, and manually delete the file.
Avast, when virus found, has the option to 'restart PC and scan' , this option I think is on the bottom left of the warning screen when virus is found.
This allows Avast to scan BEFORE windows is loaded, and most virus are not activated at that time.
When I minimized windows on my dad's account, it just gone, like when you closed those windows. even though the minimized programs are running.
-I pressed alt-tab and the minimized programs is still up and running.
-The task bar is still there, having the task bar like other pc do, minus the "minimized programs"

first and foremost, of course - try to reboot. If you have tried that, right click the task bar and get the task manager. go to the processes tab and chose explorer.exe and click end task. Then hit file%26gt;new process and type explorer.exe and hit OK test it out then. Let me know.

Like everybody has already said, the software you are using are for spyware or adware removal, rather than blocking pop ups.
You can download the Yahoo toolbar which come in-built with an Anti Spy tool and a pop up blocker and instal this to solve your problem.

Like others have said you need a toolbar with popup blocker turned on.
I use MSN but Yahoo, and Google are ok.
CAUTION!!!! many "FUN" toolbars are nothing but MALWARE.
And if you have any P2P file sharing programs like Limewire or Kazza they are loaded with Adware/Spyware constantly delivering you popups. You must deleat them! Sorry but I have seen them infest so many machines to the point where reformatting and reinstalling Windows was the only repair possiable.

Hello. Personally i used AVG free for my workstations. It works fine for me. I think all the antiviruses available now will tend to slow down our machine if it has not enough RAM (%26lt;128MB). But AVG works almost unnoticably in the background on my old machines.
You can try Norman Virus Control which also gives good protection.
And I've left McAffee and Norton weeks ago. because with the real-time scanning activated, i can do nothing with my PC. (Big slow down). even reaching my start menu would take me for ages. :)

Mcafee is fine, Norton is a terrible resource hog and the most annoying interface I have ever seen.
The choice is up to you, I have no real problems with any of them EXCEPT norton.

And from all of my internships, classes, etc...I have found Norton to be the best. Why you say it sucks? I don't know. They have more command stations around the globe tracking viruses and updating the definitiosn ASAP. McAffee has been known to cause MANY problems and software conflicts than any other program. When I worked in a computer repair shop over the summer, I found that McAffee caused around half of the problem.

That file is most likely another piece of spyware trying to load.
You should visit a site like TrendMicro.com and run their free HouseCall scan and removal tool. This has a good chance of removing any remaining traces of spyware / viruses.
Brontok AKA RontokBro virus is from Indonesia and I've seen this virus infected on a computer before and it prevents you from running Registry Editor. Most obvious way to know that you've been infected by Brontok virus is when your computer starts up, you'll get an error messsage saying that it is unable to locate the file "Kesenjangan Sosial.exe".

I've been posting before about issues with my laptop. I defragmented and its running a lot faster, BUT it still won't install or uninstall anything and the messages are saying that setup is unable to create a temporary directory or file. Your laptop is very likely infected with malware files which are controlling your access to prevent you from removing them! Run "Spybot Search %26 Destroy," then "Ad-Aware SE" to see if they find problems. My bet is that there are many buggers on your HD you aren't aware of! If you use "Limewire" or certain other music downloading programs, you are likely heavily infected!
Go to Microsoft's update page and click "express" tab. Restart system if needed. If problem persist, visit your laptops manufacturer and search for your related problems. NO, the SVCHOST.EXE is a normal and essential windows process. It acts a a host for a collection of vital services that run on your computer. Its designed for efficiency by taking many process and running them under a single executive process. You may have multiple one running due to multiple groups of processes running. You should not delete this process. However, you can limit the need for it to load by cutting down on the number of programs and processes your computer needs. Hope this helps!

If you mean blocking your computer from accessing a certain site, you can do that using the hosts file in windows.

Basically what it does is when a certain domain is requested, if it has an entry in the hosts file, it goes to whatever IP is listed for the data. All you have to do is feed it a bogus IP (usually 127.0.0.1) and it will fail every time.

It seems that your Avast antivirus program is not working properly, if it cannot finish the scan. And yes, that would put your PC in danger. As other people have said, one of the best free anti-virus programs is Grisoft AVG Free Edition, which you can download at http://free.grisoft.com/. Spybot Search%26Destroy is good for an antispyware scanner, but this still leaves you without a firewall - another security essential. If you're willing to pay for a commercial anti-virus program, you can always get one bundled with a firewall, like Norton Internet Security (a virus-scan, firewall, anti-spyware, and anti-phishing bundle). But if you want to use as much free software as possible you can keep AVG and buy a standalone firewall, such as McAfee Personal Firewall Plus. I don't recommend trying a free firewall program as most of them are not as effective as commercial versions (i.e. they filter only incoming, not outgoing traffic), unlike free anti-virus programs which can be as good as the paid ones.

Norton Internet Security already has the antivirus scanner--you should uninstall Avast since it may came into conflict with Norton. You can also add A-Squared Free, SpywareBlaster and SuperAntiSpyware to your list. Norton also already has the software firewall, so you're OK there. If you also connect to the internet through a Router, you also already has a hardware firewall too. You're OK on security although if you can i would ditch Norton Security and use ZoneAlarm Security Suite instead, it's a much much better security suite. The suite has the top notch ZoneAlarm Pro firewall, Kaspersky antivirus along with ZoneLabs antispyware.
Norton Internet security gives you the full protection. No need to install those other craps.

I got this virus in a strange manner. I was fully confident that my thumb drive didnt have a virus. When copying video files, the disk got full. When i tried to "safely remove hardware" it says "cannot be stopped now". When i right click on any drive, i see weird characters in the menu... My brother had a virus on his pc yesterday, and Avast detected it. he clicked repair and it said it had been repaired but after that the desktop kept flicking between the icons and blackness. Tried to repair from the windows disk at boot, but that seems more geared to fix it if you cant boot at all, and the stupid list of functions on Security console dont make any sense to us. Any ideas? My friend has this virus on her computer and I haven't quite figured it out yet.. but, she says it takes IE at least 30 minutes to load and she is completely unable to sign onto any instant messangers or her email.

If an anti-malware tool finds something but can't seem to get rid of it, try running it in Safe Mode. Safe Mode often prevents the malware from running and protecting itself.
Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.
To get into Safe Mode:
1.Log out and reboot your machine.
2.When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.
3.Select Safe Mode from the resulting menu.
4.The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different. You won't be able to see the Internet, for instance. Log in as Administrator. Administrator often has no password.
5.When you're finished, log out and reboot back into normal mode.

If you are running XP - then you can do a system restore. In most cases your web browser has had something link up to it and shut it down. You can go to programs, then accessories to system tools then to system restore. Make sure everything you have done in the last couple days is saved.

There might be some bug in the software of the game you are playing, or some conflict between the game and your system software.
On the other hand you might not have enough RAM, when you are playing the game, press Alt-Ctrl-Del and check your system process and see if the memory is used more than your physical memory. If so, relocating the memory for your game might be the cause of the problem.
You can do another thing to fix the internet as well, go to command prompt, type:
ipconfig /release_all
and then type
ipconfig /renew_all
This should help you as well.
First get rid of ur avast. it sucks. install AVG free. then try to scan again. if still the problem persist then u need to reinstall ur driver(network). then try to open ur RAM, clean it with an eraser then try again. if still got problem then ur OS must be in trouble. But most proberly bcoz of some virus.

Oh my, I have this problem sometimes too. I don't know why everyone say's Limwire gives you viruses. I use it, belong to it and love it. I gues I've been blessed. BUT.....my music has skipped before, in fact it did that on the last CD I made. I let it skip and fast forward it on the CD. I don't worry about trivial things such as that.
I take another approach. I have been to the point of breaking up my computer many times before. People have actually said they have heard me cussing way down the hall in my office. I save everything. Close it down. Leave the room. Go for a short walk, take care of something else, do something pleasant and then I have to go right back at it.

Ok, I used to have Mozilla Firefox, but if you look at my last questions, you'll see that it doesn't work anymore. I want a browser that can load IE pages without me having to use Internet Explorer. Mozilla had the IE tab. I don't want avast, b/c it runs in your system tray, and I don't have much RAM. Also, I want to have a pop up blocker, and maybe some good extensions. Opera cannot load my homepage correctly b/c it is encrypted and only IE can see it. So do you have a safe, fast browser that can be good as Mozilla?

Each of these Antivirus programs all have their pros and cons, hence there is no "Super Antivirus" program that kills every single virus. In fact, most of your replies would be strictly opinion based on their past experience with the programs.
You have basically listed all of the free major anti virus programs that are worth downloading, and if all of these combined could not take out a virus, you either have a heck of a mighty virus or your "virus" may be another kind of malware. Perhaps try getting some Anti Spyware programs too, such as "Spybot Search and Destroy" and "Adaware SE", both are free and can be downloaded searching for them on Yahoo, or www.pcworld.com/52516 gives you direct download links to those programs.
As well, there are specific tricks to remove various viruses. Therefore, if you do run into one that you cant get rid of, post it on Yahoo Answers and hopefully someone can give you the trick to kill it off. Good luck!

These are the top options I know about, but I want opinions on which is best. Really what I want is the one that hogs the computer the least yet is still good at virus detection.

Some malware wil change your browser and/or system settings. Go to www.superantispyware.com, download the free trial (fully functional, no need to purchase it to actually remove detected malware) do an update and run a scan. After the scan is done go to preferences, repairs and perform them as needed (if you wish you can do all of them).
Stay away from Microsoft security products. They have a really poor track record.
In that case go to some of the websites that offer more sophisticated help (for free of course).

help! everytime i switch my moniter on it always says it found a trojan horse, i delete it permenatly, shut down my pc because it goes so slow afterwards, then, it works fine, then the next time i go on again, it says its found one again, and again and again. Scan your PC in safemode. This is how to get into safemode.
For Windows XP
If the computer is running it is best to shut down Windows and then turn off the power.

Now click on the Turn Off red colored icon to shut down your computer system.
It is best to wait between 15 to 30 seconds before you turn your system back on.

Restart your computer again and begin tapping the F8 key a brief second or two later.

best way is to check every couple of days but if you have a free one that you can't regulate check it every week.
If you downloaded Threatfire (free) this gives you an early warning sign of any problems with viruses or spyware so then if you are not getting any messages from Threatfire you could just do weekly antivirus and Spybot tests. You can run Threatfire with your normal antivirus as it works in a completely different way and just gives an extra level of security and early warning signals.

my RDC (remote dekstop connection) is not working for some reason, I did all the my computer things, I even checked if my terminal service is working, and set a password for my computer, I don't know what to do! I'm using windows xp media center, and a linksys router, my firewall is avast! anything else you need to know?
First things first, test it works internally, get the Media center edition's (MCE) IP address, from start run, cmd, ipconfig. Then from another windowsXP+ computer (or any computer with remote desktop) connect to it, go to start run, type mstsc /v:MCE-ip-address
hit enter it should come up, if it doesnt then it is the pc at fault. If it does then the router is at fault.
If it does come up, then go to www.portforward.com to find out how to forward the right ports for your router. It could still be that your isp is dropping port 3389 (The remote desktop port).
If it doesn't come up then, something is wrong with how you enabled remote desktop. Go into system in control panel and advance and untick enable remote desktop, reboot, retick, and reboot.
If it comes up but won't let you login, you may need to add your user account to the remote desktop users group, go start, run, type compmgmt.msc, find users, and groups, and then open the remote desktop group and add your account. If it is already there, then you may need to add your account to the administrators group (as above), or set the password via right click, set password.
If all this doesn't work it may be beyond repair, and reinstalling windows is the only way. Or just get vnc, its free and allows interaction with the active desktop. www.realvnc.com www.tightvnc.com

i already tried to remove or repair the infected files but i think all antivirus are not capable to do so..is there a way to clean or heal the infected files...? is it safe for my system to delete the system volume files? i also tried remove the virus in safe mode but it doesn't work. guys please i need your help i tried everything i know but it didn't!

Turn off your System restore and re-run your anti virus..
In Windows XP
Go to the MyComputer icon on your desktop and right click on it with your mouse and chose Properties.
Go to the System Restore (tab)
Checkmark "Turn off System Restore"
Click APPLY then OK and then YES
After your system is clean. Turn system restore back on by uncheckmarking the box.
If you had reformatted from a clean boot and reloaded you would be done now.
Trend Micro used to work really well.
ok so i got a virus that seemed to make my internet very slow, and i got spyware that had a little yellow triangle with an exclamation point near my clock that gave me tons of pop ups. so i downloaded avg 7.5, avg anti spyware, ad aware se personal, and spybot. now all of these programs with 2 days of thorough scans seemed to support what i thought. i had a trojan virus and lots of spyware, but these programs did nothing to help only detect. after searching specifically for these problems i found that people used avast! antivirus for the trojan, and SUPERantispyware for the yellow triangle problem. 1 day later they both got taken care. The next day i did scans with all programs including those and nothing is detected. BUT BUT my internet is dsl and is going as slow or slower than dial up. this has nothing to do with the modem seeing as i play my ps3 lag free, so i dont know what the problem is but i want it fixed. please help!
Use this procedure.
1) Update AVG, Ad-aware, Spybot, whatever else you got.
2) Reboot into safe mode
3) Turn off restore points.
4) Run everything and let them clean up.
5) Reboot into normal mode
6) Turn restore points back on.

You need to have the latest definitions of viruses to quarantine or delete that virus. I think other antivirus softwares will remove the virus.
You can either try to update your version of AVG antivirus or install other antiviruses such as Symantic(which helped me in deleting the similar or same virus i think so), Mc afee, Norton.
See that before scanning definitions of virus are up to date.
Search your registry for that virus and delete it, if that doesn't remove it just format your drive,virus some people makes money that way.
Try "Disk Cleanup" In "SAVE MODE" when you start your system Press F8 key to go to save mode.
Go to start --%26gt; Programs--%26gt; Accessories --%26gt; Disk cleanup click on it and select your drive 'C' and then click 'OK'
a menu appears select all the check boxes and again click OK. This will remove all temp files and folders from your system.
After doing this Run your Anti virus program to check for the viruses.
Else upgrade your anti-virus first then check.
Try this I think this may work..
first shut down the pc.
unplug from you internet
before the windows logo appears, press f8 many times until a menu appears
choose safe mode
run your anti virus and try to clean
what we have done is run windows without any plugins such as a virus in your system.
this is not a sure shot but at least you tried something rather than nothing
please go to safe mode by pressing 'F8' key when computer starts.scan with an updated antivirus.
if the virus is still there please format the drive and reinstall the windows.

OMG, FORT KNOX the only thing i would change is the firewall. i would switch to zonealarm. for free. BUT, if your system is running fine without any problems, then keep it as is.
i'm pretty sure those softwares work just fine, but for the best protection, any software that u use, u must update often.
its pretty good considering its all free. I would personally recommend Zone Alarm's free fire wall over comodo though.

i downloaded avast and after downloading it my computer crashed. it wont start my windows i tried starting it on safe mode but it just turns off. nothing has worked my labtop came with xp when i bought it so i dont have the xp cd. is there any way i can fix it without losing all my data.
by a second hand hard drive and master it with XP then slave your old hard drive to see if u can access it

well if you cant boot ur harddrive the only solution is to reformat it but if you dont want to lose any data. If some one you knw has a bootable portable harddive, you can try booting off that and then backing everything up or use linux live cd and then burning ur data on cd/dvd (only works if you have 2 drives).

To be honest.. if you are having that much trouble just getting into safe-mode.. might be time to bring it to a computer shop.
I'm sure some people could walk you through how to boot your computer on a floppy then try to investigate or diagnose the problem... but it would take a long time and I doubt most people will do this for free.
Well since your laptop came with windows xp on the machine, chances are, there is a recovery partition, you may try going to that recovery partition and seeing if you can just reload windows, without reformatting the drive.
If you reload without reformatting you wouldn't necessarily lose any data, your apps may not work because they'd have to be reinstalled, but the data should be there.
Otherwise, you may want to get some sort of data recovery application, or create a backup image of your hard drive. Take that backup image then you can do a re-format and do the recovery of your OS and then copy over the data from the backup image.

Really when i failed clreaning the virus using : AVG ,Avast ,Kaspersky , Mcafee Anti Virus , I do just one action : format the Hard Disk C: , Reinstall Windows , and format all the other hard disk partitions . Basically if I select some websites (usually from favourites/ bookmarks) I get hijacked to other completely unrelated ones. At the bottom left of my screen it'll announce briefly that I'm connecting to the site I've asked for, and then in a second it'll say it's downloading information from another site and load a different page.
I've scanned the system several times with Avast! and AVG but bad nothing shows up.
I've also switched from Internet Explorer to Firefox, but the same thing started happening within a couple of weeks.
Is there anything you can recommend to flush out whatever it is that's doing the hijacking and leave my browser in peace?

Try running an anti spyware in Safe Mode, then using TweakUI from the Microsoft site to re-install your Hosts file by using the Repair Internet Explorer button.
Also, here's some software that will prevent browser hijacks in future;
Before attempting to remove malware you must switch off System Restore as back up files will be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.
I downloaded the install file after an unknown person invited me. I downloaded the file from yahoo canada and Avast reported a virus warning (Win32:Trojan-gen. %26#123;Other%26#125;) Then I went to Yahoo US, overwrote the instal file, and got the same viruswarning again. what now ?
I know this isn't the answer your wanting but the same happened to me but I downloaded the file from Yahoo.com. I use Avast anti-virus program. I'm just glad I'm not the only one. My computer has not shown symptoms of a virus except when I try to install Msgr

If the above instructions fail, if you are running windows XP, try using the system restore utility to restore your system state to an earlier time.
Otherwise, maybe its time to reinstall windows on your PC. Ask a technician's help to do it :).

I've tried AVG, Avast Anti-Virus, Spyhunter, and Spybot Search and Destroy- they either don't find it, or say they remove it and it shows up as still being there- and my computer is lagging *badly*.

Viruses aren't the only thing that cause computer lag.
A badly fragmented hard-drive can also cause it. Try Opening "My Computer", Right-Clicking your C:\ drive, then PROPERTIES%26gt;%26gt;TOOLS%26gt;%26gt;DEFRAGMENT NOW.
Hit DEFRAGMENT, (unless You WANT to see the indecipherable "fragmentation report" the analyzer pulls up).
It may take a while, but usually a defrag (especially if You've never done one) will help remove lag, and also improve the effectiveness of anti-virus/spyware programs...
Also,
Make sure your setting for a "Full Scan", one that will go through compressed files as well. If there is a copy hidden in a compressed file it may keep replacing the ones that get found.
get some form of internet security, e.g. avg, just google avg.
ad-aware is way better than spybot usually. Give that a shot!
Use some other software. Norton, panda are free antivirus software. Ad-aware, Ewido are free spyware removers. You can download free softwares at http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html
